2016 Mustang Week Recap

by Jaron Cole

The Mustang Week Staff would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone for all they’ve done to help us make the 15th Annual Mustang Week an overwhelming success.  We realize that without volunteers, participants, and the sponsorship there is no way that we would be able to continue hosting the largest annual Mustang event in the country.   It is always exciting to see participants moving around the different venues, interacting with each other and leading industry sponsors.   Mustang Week is different from any other event in the country.  Mustang Week is not merely a show.  If you attend all the scheduled events, you will see that Mustang Week is an “experience” that can be rivaled by no other weekend show.  Where else can you combine a beach vacation with all kinds of driving events and shows?  Only at Mustang Week!

Tuesday’s Meet-n-Greet drew well over 1,000 Mustangs and SVTs and over 2,000 people to the Myrtle Beach Convention Center.  Each year the Meet-n-Greet continues to grow.  The move to the Convention Center proved to be a great success, offering ample paved parking away from the traveling public.  One thing is for certain, all that participated in the Meet-n-Greet seemed to have a great time.  It is a great way to kick of the week!

Wednesday and Thursday’s  BFGoodrich Track Day at Myrtle Beach Speedway was great!  Just over 450 cars participated in both the Stifflers Speedway Fun Runs and the Gateway Classic Mustang Autocross.  Formula Drift stars Vaughn Gittin Jr. and Justin Pawlak made their way onto the track several times throughout the afternoon and added to the excitement.  The annual SVTPerformance Burnout Contest ended the day and thrilled the crowd in the stands.  In all, just over 5,500 people took part as a driver or spectator at the Speedway.

Thursday morning was full of action.  Not only did we return for a second morning at the Myrtle Beach Speedway, a huge crowed turned out for the Muscle Mustangs and Fast Fords Dyno Shootout, hosted by Pro-Dyno at Myrtle Beach Mall.  Later that day Mustang Week made the annual trek to the Mickey Thompson Darlington Drag Night at the legendary Darlington Dragway.  Just over 300 cars took part in the drag racing action and over 2,000 people attended.  And it goes without saying that the new Darlington Dragway owners and management staff deserves a great deal of thanks for all of their efforts with track and facility improvements.  They went above and beyond throughout the day to make sure participants could get the most out of their experience!  Those that attended saw all the vast track improvements as well as facility improvements.

Friday’s annual Car Show continues to be one of the premier Mustang shows on the East Coast.  The show was again completely sold out as we packed the show field.  This was also participant’s first chance to see all the great sponsor displays.  The sponsor displays get better every year.  Just over 12,000 people attended the show that day and the surrounding lots were filled with Mustangs as far as the eye could see.

We finished out Mustang Week 2016 with the annual Cruise-In.  This is the event that started it all 15 years ago and this year didn’t disappoint.  Over 3,000+ Mustangs packed the show field and surrounding lots.  Just over 12,000 people attended.  Later in the afternoon the Mustang Week Staff held the Car Show awards and annual Mustang Week raffle.  At the close of the day there were still many walking through displays as the week drew to a close.

The Mustang Week Staff would like to give a special “shout-out” to this year’s volunteers.  Without volunteers we simply could not handle each day’s events.  Volunteers endure the heat and offer their valuable time for very little return.  Many work multiple, if not all the events.  We are humbled and honored to call these volunteers friends and part of the Mustang Week family.  We can’t thank you enough for all you do.

The Staff is already hard at work planning for Mustang Week 2017.  We will continue to make changes to further the enjoyment and safety of each day’s event.  We hope that you will continue to join us at the ultimate Mustang experience.  Please keep an eye out for upcoming Mustang Week 2017 information.  Again, thank you for all you do in helping us make Mustang Week the year’s most anticipated event.
