Default My 96 Cobra's getting new paint!!

Any of you that have known me for some time have heard me say that my car has always been held together by touch-up paint. I was a detailer during undergrad and grad school, so I learned to hide the bad spots to some degree. A repaint was inevitable, especially when the factory paint started letting go. First it was the tops of the rear fenders. Rodney Melton (rodcobra) fixed those before MW 07. Then it was the roof. Some friends around home fixed that the week before MW 08. Then, just before MW 09, it really got bad. Typical Ford paint from mid 90's. It was letting go because of poor adhesive properties between the paint and primer. I've seen it on many. Here's a shot from this past winter as the car sat in my family's driveway waiting on me to scavange the funds to fix it.

After MW Staff made contact with Hi-End Auto, in Appomattox, VA, we found that the owner (Robert) had a very nice paint shop that he used to fix any imperfections on cars on his lot. He won't stand for a car to look any less than perfect when it is for sale on his lot. After some trading of photos and negotiation, he and I came to an agreement and here are the first of some photos documenting my car's journey to Hi-End last Friday (April 1st).

Loaded and ready. I could have drove it but we have a good friend with a Featherlite open trailer so we decided to make it easy on ourselves and set out on the 4 hour ride north.

Here's the car sitting in front of Hi-End in Appomattox, Va!

    Taking it appart!

And here is a cell phone pic of the progress as of yesterday!

I can't wait to see how it all turns out! Oh yeah, I'm going back with the factory (Crystal White) paint. More to come....

Brad, I'm the one that sent Mike the photo of your car yesterday. I go to Hi-End Auto fairly frequently as Josh (their mechanic) and I are good friends and he has been doing some of the many mods that I have done to my '11 GT.

I will try and snap some more photos when I go back up there!!

I can send them to Mike again or if you pm me your number I will send them directly to you.

I know you are looking forward to your car having new paint!!

After it started happening to mine (some years back) I started noticing it on the road on many, many cars from the mid 90's.

I have seen several Mustangs with the peel, but have seen more of the vans, taurus', and cars like that. The top of my wife's Escape, near where the hinges are on the back door, it has happened a little. My 2000 Explorer is doing it a little in the same spot.

This looks pretty easy at this point but that is 12 hours into the removal. It is pretty labor intensive but will provide Brad a job that should look great and last. -Robert

The clear on my 04 has started to peel on the tops of the rear fenders as well (every other part is fine). I hope to get it fixed sometime soon, but most likely not before MW 11. Hope yours comes out great.

I'm actually happy to see it taken apart and being done properly. What killed me was to see it sit in my folk's driveway for the past two years and not having the funds to do anything about it.
